Lithuania - Russia V
The last part of this tour was the border at Kybartai. This old city is close to the border with Russia. The railroad connection between
Kaunas and Kaliningrad crosses the border here. It was only 15 minutes by car from Vystatis to here. I parked at the graveyard and approached the border from there. |
South of the graveyard Fences with cameras and spotlights. A typical measure for populated areas. These fences look pretty new. |
Small path along the fence The grass and the weed is rather high here, but it has been cut along the fence. I think it's used as inspection road. |
Russian and Lithuanian pole Through the bars I could spot a pair of borderpoles. Again there were no numbers on them. The distance between them looks more than the usual 4 meters. I think there is a creek between them, forming the border. I should come back in early spring when there is less vegetation. |
Fence with camera The fence continues. Again spotlights and a camera. |
Little building Close to the entrance of the graveyard there is this little building. I don't know if it has a relation to the graveyard or to the border. |
More cameras More fences, more cameras and a view into the flat land. |
Another pair Another pair of borderpoles without a number. Again they are situated quite far from eachother. |
Old fence Somewhere here the fence changed. This is al older fence. On the background there are s the tracks crossing the border. You can see an inspection bridge that is used to check the wagons that cross the border. |
Sensors in the fence I saw such sensors earlier on the border between Lithuania and Belarus: they detect when some one climbs over the fence. On the background a single Lithuanina borderpole. From here I turned back to my car. To avoid problems I didn't want to come too close to the railway border crossing. I know that could lead to some agitation and irritation. I went back to the car to visit some parts of the border north of Kybartai. |
North of Kybartai |
North of Kybartai The border comes close to a small road here. Again only a Lithuanina pole without a number. I followed the border for some hunded meters. No fences here anymore, just open space. It was getting late, I was hungry and a bit tired after 4 exhausting days. |
Railway to the border On my way back I had to wait for the railcrossing in Kybartai. A good opportunity to have a last look at the border. The zone along the tracks is closed by a fence. The border itself is not that far from here: just behind the curve and the inspection bridge I guess. On Google maps (satelite view) you can see it very clearly. |
Railway crossing Almost sunset. A huge freight train is leaving Kybartai, heading off to Kaliningrad! |
