Map 0651-0660 Area west of Copceac and south of Săiți including the needle.
Border marker 0651 West of Copceac on a hill. Nice view on the ditch filled with water and a small lake. The border runs through this lake.
Border marker 0652 Only one marker here which is accessable from it's front. The marker is situated about 10 meters from the bank of the lake. The Ukrainian marker stands on the opposite site.
Border marker 0653 At the end of the lake the border makes an angle to the north. This turning point however is situated in the swamp. Therefore the position of the border markers is not on the turning point itself. On Ukrainian side there is a second border marker 0653. But not on this picture, it was too far away to get it right on a picture.
Border marker 0654 One of the few places with a sand strip on Moldovan side. So we had to keep a safe distance here not to leave any foot prints. Here the east part of our April 2024 expedition stops. We continued with some remaning tasks of last expedtion (0665, 0690, 0691, 0717 and 0718) and then continued at 0725 in Basarabeasca.
Border marker 0655 The first border marker during the September 2023 expedition. South east of Săiți. A small road led to a small lake where some locals where fishing. On this picture you see the sand walls the Ukrainians are raising in combination with digging a ditch.
Border marker 0656 Situated near a former tarred road which is not in use anymore. On the second picture an old statute which you sometimes find entering cities or villages. A sign of faded glory.
The former road This former road between Olexandrivka (UA) and Lesnoe (UA) is closed. Most likely the road was closed in 1991 when Moldova and Ukraine became independent which ment a new border between two (new) countries. The few traffic can use the border crossing Săiți/Lesnoe or take a detour in Ukraine. However, not much traffic here, the region is very sparsely populated.
Border marker 0657 The beginning of the needle. This narrow strip of land is about two kilometers long and only 200 meters wide.
The needle Almost half way the needle. The black soil is Moldova, the edges both left and right are the borders.
Intermediate marker Here you will find some small simple intermediate sub markers, like you see them between almost all main markers. And again here a ditch combined with a wall on Ukrainian side.
Border marker 0658 At the one end of the needle.
Border marker 0659 And here the other end of the needle. Now it goes straight up all the way back. During my hike back to the car at BM 0656 I encountered two border guards. They hardly spoke a word English and although my permit what quite clear they called their basis in Ştefan Vodă. There was a friendly lady who spoke English and to whom I had to explain my activities. It was all right and I told her my further plans for today. She would inform the colleages in the field.
Border marker 0660 Close to BM 0660 the border makes a kind of a 90 degreed curve, which is only covered by some sub markers. Here the border makes a straight 90 degreed angle to the north. |
